denver’s newest filipino restaurant, by carlo Lamagna,“transcends traditions”

For Chef Carlo Lamagna the story of Magna is one of connection — between friends, values, heritage, and a shared purpose.

For Magna Kainan, we partnered with Chef Carlo Lamagna—Food & Wine’s 2021 Best New Chef and 2022 James Beard finalist—and Chef Max Mackissock, known for Michelin-recommended A5 Steakhouse and Bib Gourmand-awarded Ash’Kara. Together with the Culinary Creative Group, we designed a space that brings their vision of Filipino comfort food to life with warmth and authenticity.

“Kainan,” meaning “eatery” in Tagalog, is a refined, wood-fired exploration of Filipino flavors. Drawing inspiration from the energy of Filipino night markets and the vibrancy of traditional parol (festive lanterns), our design celebrates the cultural essence of the Philippines. Layered textures, warm wood tones, and colorful accents reflect the lively spirit of community gatherings, while subtle details pay homage to Filipino artistry and traditions.

Magna Kainan blends contemporary culinary innovation with deep cultural roots, echoing its sister restaurant, Magna Kusina, in Portland, Oregon. The space creates a setting where the rich heritage of Filipino cuisine comes alive, offering a welcoming environment for both first-time explorers and longtime enthusiasts.

With a focus on bringing people together through food, drink, and design, Magna Kainan invites you to experience the flavors and spirit of the Philippines. As the team says, Mangan tayon!—Let’s eat!

Cuisine isn’t meant to be gate-kept. It’s not. It’s meant to be shared by gathering at a table.
